Accompaniments October 1, 2010

You’ve got a main dish in mind, but it just won’t be right till you have great accompaniments to go with it! Retro favorites are in fashion right now (think the 1960’s and “Mad Men”) and are noted below.  Here are some ideas to make that meal really superb:

Roasted Sweet Potatoes with Figs, Leeks, and Goat Cheese – Inspired by the “Jerusalem” cookbook, and out of this world, mixing sweet and savory ingredients in new ways
Elote – Grilled Corn with lime juice, crema, cotillja cheese, and spices – on the cob
Fried Green Tomatoes – a southern and farm house favorite for fall!
Aunt Estelle’s Strawberry Jello Mold (retro):  with sour cream and walnuts in the middle, and pineapple and strawberries mixed in.  Delicious for the holidays!
Shaker Carrots:  Carrots with a spicy twist, both savory and sweet
Glazed Carrots with cinnamon and brown sugar
Tzimmes (can also be made with meat):  parsnips, carrots, potato, sweet potato, prunes, apricots. Wonderful with roasted meats or as a vegetarian entree.  It’s not just for Rosh Hashanah and Passover!
Noodle Kugel:  Bubbe would be proud!  Noodles with sour cream, raisins, cinnamon, ricotta, and a lot of love.
Home fries:  Old fashioned, with or without diced bacon added.  Crusty, Tender, flavorful, and great for dinner or
Ratatouille Home Fries – combining fried peppers, onions, cherry tomatoes, basil, zucchini, and potatoes!
Sour Cream-Garlic Mashed Potatoes
Scalloped Potatoes
Mujaddarah – Middle Eastern lentil pilaf with coriander and fried onions, served with yogurt sauce
Twice-Baked Potatoes with or without a variety of toppings
Herb and Vegetable CousCous
Risotto Primavera (Add Shrimp for a main dish)
Mushroom Risotto
Roasted Fall Vegetables with Cranberries and Balsamic drizzle
Zucchanoes:  Zucchini boats with tomatoes, onion, fennel, and more
Asparagus with Hollandaise or Lemon-butter
Broccolini with Garlic and Herbs
Stuffed Winter Squash
Glazed Shallots
Creamed Onions:  A holiday treat, yours any time of year
Sweet Potatoes with Bourbon, Brown Sugar, and Pecans
Artichokes with a variety of Sauces
:  something really elegant for your next sit-down dinner
Red Cabbage with Apples and Caraway
Zucchini Pancakes (also known as Mucver)
Potato Latkes with Applesauce and Sour Cream
Homemade New England-Style Baked Beans, with or without Salt Pork (retro)
Homemade Farm-Style Baked Beans, with Bacon, tomato sauce, and onions
Gram’s Farm-Style Baked Lima Beans
Green Beans Almondine
Baked, spiced winter squash
